Aberfan and Merthyr Vale

Pont y Gwaith to Aberfan

(approx 1.9 miles 3km)

Leaving the hump back bridge at Pont y Gwaith we climb up the valley side and under the A470 road. The surface under this subway was originally constructed as a series of concrete steps making it impossible to ride and difficult to push a bicycle. The steps have been removed at one side which improves the situation slightly.

At the top we come to the former Glamorganshire Canal. The Taff Trail follows the canal towpath (with one or two interruptions) as far as Rhydycar on the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil. Also it is possible to follow the canal back to Abercynon.

Turn right along the level for 1.5km leaving the towpath before dropping down through another subway under the A470. Down the hill past several new houses, turn sharp left past a couple of boulders to rejoin the canal towpath through to Aberfan.

Aberfan and Merthyr Vale

Aberfan is well known for the disaster on 21 October 1966. As the Taff Trail runs along the contour of the valley, the Garden of Remembrance can be seen high above.

Merthyr Vale is across the other side of the valley from the Taff Trail.
