Nantgarw to Pontypridd

(approx 4.3 miles 7km)

Cross the fast Dual Carriageway at Nantgarw via a Pelican Crossing and follow the signs through the residential streets back to the next traffic free section of the `Trail. The route continues in a rural setting in woodland, with the farms and grazing animals on the hillside to the right. There is a view over the valley and industrial estates down the hill to the left.

Through Rhydyfelin we are suddenly in a suburban area on the edge of Pontypridd. Then via the huge Glyntaff Cemetery. After the electricity engineering centre on the left, a bell is required here since there are two blind corners as we turn right into a very narrow path, then left into Cemetery Road. Car parking for the Cemetary can also block the exit.

Turn right at the main road, follow to the junction of Ynysangharad Road - the nearest point to the centre of Pontypridd.

This is the point in Pontypridd in Bridge Street next to a row of shops and an interchange of the A470 road. This just happens to be the point where the Taff Trail and National Cycle Routes 4, 8 and 47 come together. The old Taff bridge can be seen down the hill.

The 2 east-west routes 4 and 47 cross the river on this bridge (well... the new one) going West. The "low level route 4" then runs in common with the "8" and the Taff Trail going south to Nantgarw where is breaks away to Caerphilly going east. The "high level route 47" joins the "8" going North for approx. 3 miles to Quaker`s Yard where it turns east towards Ystrad Mynach and the Hengoed Viaduct.

The route South starts out along Ynysangharad Road, and North we go into West Street (next to the shops) and the one way system of parallel streets of Trallwn.
