Pont y Gwaith

Aberfan to Pont y Gwaith

(approx 1.9 miles 3km)

From Aberfan follow the contour of the hill South with the arches of Garden of Remembrance up the hill to the left. At the end of the village turn sharp right up the hill to a subway under the A470. Then turn left into a roadway which runs parallel to the A470 for about 1.5km.

An alternative lane ahead, whilst climbing for the first few hundred yards is a pleasant route going directly to Abercynon missing out Quaker`s Yard.

The Trail now passes through a gate on the left and steeply downhill through another subway. Owing to its stepped construction, it is almost impossible to ride down through. Past the subway its just a short way to Pant y Gwaith.

Pont y Gwaith

The plaque by the Merthyr Tydfil Heritage Trust reads "Taff Trail Heritage Sites. Pont y gwaith meaning the `Works Bridge` was constructed in 1811 to replace a wooden bridge associated with the nearby 16th century ironworks. Repaired in 1993 by Mid Glamorgan County Counciland awarded a commendation by the Civic Trust."

At this point the Taff Trail crosses to the opposite side of the valley.

From the bridge to go South climb the lane to the former Trevithick railway track towards Quaker's Yard.

The Northern route climbs up the hill under the A470 subway. This surface in this steep subway was constructed as a series of concrete steps making it impossible to ride and difficult to push a bicycle. This was slightly improved by the construction of a ramp along one side of the steps.
