Quaker`s Yard

Abercynon to Quaker`s Yard

(approx 1.2 miles 2km)

Tram Road Side starts off as an insignificant little lane between highways depot and the river. However as we progress, the valley gets narrower as we squeeze along the gorge between the river and the main road which, unseen, is many feet above our heads. Eventually the A470, then the A472 cross over high viaducts completely ignoring the trail and the fast flowing river below.

We then pass a few houses, cross the river, pass above a caravan park along litter-strewn back lane into Quaker's Yard. Carefully cross over a lane on a steep hill (Roderick's Terrace has a blind corner when travelling North).

Quaker`s Yard

(approx 1.2 miles 2km)

At Quaker's Yard the Taff Trail passes above a caravan park along a back lane. The lane (Roderick's Terrace) is on a steep hill with a blind corner.

If following Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 47 (East), drop down Roderick's Terrace across the bridge over the river and the main road. Turn left at the Quaker's Yard Inn. Another left takes you across the stream to the mostly off-road route through to Newport via Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed and the Sirhowy Valley.

If using the train access to the Taff Trail is better from Abercynon (North or South station) than from Quaker's Yard.
