Abercynon to Pontypridd

(approx 4.7 miles 7.5km)

This part of the Taff Trail runs along a common line with both National Cycleway Routes 8 and 47. From the junction of Tram Road Side next to the fire station, follow the main road past Navigation House, up the hill left at traffic lights over the A470 on a bridge and right at the next lights. Follows the main A4054 road towards Cilfynydd.

Just before Cylfynydd, turn right through the Albion Industrial Estate passing the Coedylan Comprehensive School and the Cilfynydd Welfare Rugby Ground. Turn left into a delightful path alongside the river. Up the hill to Coedpenmaen Rd.

Turn right to drop down Bonvilston Road, following the one-way system to the A470 interchange.

Whilst this is the official route and mostly traffic free, starting from Cilfynydd, I usually continue along the main road to avoid a steep hill at the far end of the traffic-free section and the A470 interchange at Bridge Street.

This is the point in Pontypridd in Bridge Street next to a row of shops and an interchange of the A470 road. This just happens to be the point where the Taff Trail and National Cycle Routes 4, 8 and 47 come together. The old Taff bridge can be seen down the hill.

The 2 east-west routes 4 and 47 cross the river on this bridge (well... the new one) going West. The "low level route 4" then runs in common with the "8" and the Taff Trail going south to Nantgarw where is breaks away to Caerphilly going east. The "high level route 47" joins the "8" going North for approx. 3 miles to Quaker`s Yard where it turns east towards Ystrad Mynach and the Hengoed Viaduct.

The route South starts out along Ynysangharad Road, and North we go into West Street (next to the shops) and the one way system of parallel streets of Trallwn.

Coedpenmaen Road Post

The inscription on the post says "The resources of our earth`s renewal are here waiting the alchemy of repentance to resurrect from the iron of the cauldron, not force, but fellowship". The added graffiti says "Taff Trail - Thank you for your help" - is this a sarcastic comment?
